This week”s Monday Mixtape is a request by @Eb_the_Celeb. A few months back she requested a 90′s girl mix. I tried to include many of the girl groups and collabos that were quite popular in 90′s R&B. I left some people out like Xscape but this is a theme I know I will return to. In the mid 90′s I spent a lot of time in the clubs and doing Karaoke..but how is that different from now?? Anyway..

Me and Eb been cool for a good long while. The Internet does that to people but I’ve met her in person too. A Harlem Socialite..Eb’s great enthusiam is only matched by her hard work. The Girl is busy! She’s into sports, reflection, video and of course music! I’m glad she had patience for this mix and I think it’s my finest to date in terms of beatmatching by ear…Can’t wait for my Serato box! I hope you enjoy it!

Hey everybody! This mix of new songs is real New York heavy. It could be from the fact that we moved again in Harlem. Really the heart of Harlem this time. I love New York. The feel of the artists..the pounding of the beats. I could see myself having a Lil Mama moment during Jay-Z’s performance too. Shout out to my boy Fave for putting together a quick cover for me and my lil Mama moment!

Most of the songs are relatively new. My daughters made requests for Chris Brown, Beyonce, and Pitbull. I included a new artist Jay Sean cause his song was really catchy to me. My new R&B favorites Ryan Leslie, Mario and Trey Songz.

I put in R. Kelly’s new joint “Religious” which took me to church. I got Boyz II Men’s new single “Back For Good” which is a remake of the hit by Take That. Shout out to my girl Eb_the_Celeb for the link!

Did you miss me? I missed you. I missed you so much I followed you today..

This mix means a lot to me. Those of you who knew me as a teenager, knew that I was a firm follower of the Daisy Age. I walked around with hand painted daisies on the butts of my jeans, wore a leather Africa piece, had the Mexican poncho with the Native American woven backpack. In my ears was a yellow Sony waterproof Walkman with homemade mixtapes of pro Black, pro Women, pro progress music. This was also during the aftermath of the crack epidemic…when Harlem still could resemble New Jack City..and the lyrics in the musics lamented the effects of crack and what it did to ordinary people.

It was music for teenagers..dealing with similar issues…it helped us address our raging hormones..boys wanted the same thing girls wanted…and it was ok…you wasn’t gonna hit it…but we could laugh about the desire. Nobody was called a ho, a b*tch, or a slut. There was no n*gga in every other sentence. They talked about keeping cool, never mentioned a gun and even addressed the taboo subject of complexion.

I love this music. It meant a lot to me. It carried me through my last two years of HS right on into Temple University. That’s why this is the Temple Mix.

<itunes:summary>This mix means a lot to me. This was also during the aftermath of the crack epidemic...when Harlem still could resemble New Jack City..and the lyrics in the musics lamented the effects of crack and what it did to ordinary people.</itunes:summary>

Moving back to New York in 08 has had it’s challenges but has been very rewarding.

Most people who come to my site now don’t know that I started off as topic driven blogger 4 years ago (who had the long posts lol). I always had the moniker DJ Diva before I started blogging. I started spinning music to make extra money to support my decision to finish my degree. I was blessed to have a steady gig before I had equipment. This fact always makes me smile.

In 2009 I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be able to go back to the school and finish my quest for a Ph.D in English. Those of you who have met me in person, know that I talk of nothing but my research and fascination with my dissertation topic.

In 2008 I picked up a new computer..with a new program I had never used before…and with the skills I already had…managed to pump out over 50 mixtapes. None of them are the same. I have barely repeated songs with the exception of The DJ Diva’s Best of 2008. I think I lived up to my moniker of DJ Diva-The Mixtress of R&B (Top downloads shown below)

I became the fourth most followed person in Harlem on Twitter

Needless to say I have been very proud of myself.

Being the perfectionist that I aim to be, 2009 also brings the opportunity to expand my hobby of DJaying more thoroughly. I say hobby because while it is one of the talents I have: my JOB is to take care of my family and reach the first goal of becoming a professor of Urban Literature, The Harlem Renaissance and Shakespeare. The great thing is now I can combine the experience of creating these free podcasts with my equipment and begin to combine the two to make extra cash and to have a good time. Most of you should know by now that I love to have a good time.

Where does that leave The Mixtress?

I can’t leave my girl behind. She is my baby and I worked hard to get her up and running. I have received a lot of love on the site and while most of my readers over at djdiva.blogspot.com haven’t made the jump with me, my traffic has consistently grown based on the mixes alone. I feel as if I am shortchanging these readers with a once a week mix and nothing else to do when they get to my site. In 2009 I plan to upgrade her in time for her first year anniversary. There will be other changes: adding more new music downloads, more new artists spotlights/interviews and of course the Monday Mixtape.

I know this may seem overwhelming to some but 2009 is about work for me. Work toward my job as a wife, and mother. Work to achieve my lifetime goals. And work to expand my talents.

But it’s good work. As Mos Def says in Champion Requiem:

And my work is personal, I’m a workin person
I put in work, I work with purpose

What are you gonna do for 2009?

I had so much fun this year doing these new music compilation mixtapes. In case you missed them: February Jams April Rain June Jackin Back to School November Swerve December Remix I have been told I have a talent for picking hits. This could be true by looking at the lists and seeing many songs that have ended up banging on the radio. Also I have been critisized for not cutting and scratching…so in the first half of the mix I experimented with some cutting and special effects…ehh…we’ll see if I do it again. 2009 will bring my one year anniversary on the mixtress…I’m even shocked that I stuck with it this long and didn’t go back to personal blogging. It’s been fun but of course the game has to be stepped up! Look for changes and for all of yall tired of one track mixes…I got something for yall too…

I want to thank my fellow podcasters and especially my husband for supplying me great drops for this mix…I didn’t bother putting on a intro and outro because you guys hyped me more than I ever could!

Scribe (My Husband), Fave, Mr. Fresh, Darrenkeith, Todd Kelley….I inadvertently left out my mentor EJ Flavors…But yall know that not only is he my Sensei but he is one of my real friends! Of course I have a reason for every song I play and this time I decided to share those tidbits with you!!!! Happy New Year and I look forward to bringing you more hot new jams in 09!

Today's Monday Mixtape is an oldschool artist spotlight on Barry White. I remember going to see his concert in 1995 at Madison Square Garden with my cousins.
Today’s Monday Mixtape is an oldschool artist spotlight on Barry White. I remember going to see his concert in 1995 at Madison Square Garden with my cousins. We sat behind Q-Tip and we was having so much fun…Q-Tip looked like he wanted to leave his date and join us! But seriously…Barry White was the ultimate love song soul singer. His songs had introductions that resembled foreplay..and he never let you down with his next course. This mixtape is also dedicated to my sister Divalicious…because of her I know all about the Icon of Love …I let the beat rock on a lot of these…I’m sure you hear the beats on most of your favorite rap and r&b songs sampled from Barry! Also some of my favorite deep voiced Podcasters stopped in to show me love: Mr. Fresh, Fave, DarrenKeith and of course the Sensei EJ Flavors!

Enjoy!

Biography:

Early life and career
White was born in Galveston, Texas and grew up in the high-crime areas of South Central Los Angeles, where he joined a gang at the age of 10. At 17, he was jailed for four months for stealing $30,000 worth of Cadillac tires.

While in prison, White listened to Elvis Presley singing “It’s Now or Never” on the radio, an experience he later credited with changing the course of his life. After his release, he left gang life and began a musical career at the dawn of the 1960s in singing groups before going out on his own in the middle of the decade. The marginal success he had to that point was as a songwriter; his songs were recorded by rock singer Bobby Fuller and TV bubblegum act The Banana Splits. He was also responsible in 1963 for arranging “Harlem Shuffle” for Bob & Earl, which became a hit in the UK in 1969. He discovered disco artist Viola Wills in 1965, and signed her to Bronco Records.

Success
In August 1969, he got his break producing a girl group called Love Unlimited. His best friend Max Murray helped him get his start in music. He made Barry his prodigy and led him to fame. Formed in imitation of the legendary Motown girl group The Supremes, the group members honed their talents with White for the next two years until they all signed contracts with 20th Century Records. White produced, wrote and arranged the classic soul ballad “Walking in the Rain (With The One I Love)”, which hit the Top 20 of the pop charts. The group would score more hits throughout the ’70s and White eventually married the lead singer of the group, Glodean James.

While working on a few demos for a male singer, the record label suggested White step out in front of the microphone, to which he reluctantly agreed. His first solo chart hit, 1973′s “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby”, rose to #1 R&B and #3 Pop. That same year, the Love Unlimited Orchestra’s recording of White’s composition “Love’s Theme” reached #1 Pop in 1974, one of only two instrumental recordings ever to do so. Some regard “Love’s Theme” as the first disco hit ever.

Other chart hits by White include “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up” (1973), “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” (1974), “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” (1974), “What Am I Gonna Do With You” (1975), “Let the Music Play” (1976), “It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me” (1977), “Your Sweetness is My Weakness” (1978), and “Change” (1982).

Considered handsome and deeply romantic by his many female fans and admired for the unique blend of soul and classical orchestral musical elements he created, White was often affectionately referred to as the “Maestro” or “The Man with the Velvet Voice”. His portly physical stature led some in the popular press to make condescending jokes about his weight by referring to White as the “Walrus of Love,” a moniker considered disrespectful by many fans. Barry White was also referred to as “The Sultan of Smooth Soul,” but it was his role as brainchild of the funk-fueled, deep soul band, the Love Unlimited Orchestra, in which he was widely branded on several early albums as the group’s Maestro, earning him the only documented nickname for which he and his musical colleagues were responsible.

Comebacks
Although White’s success on the pop charts slowed down as the disco era came to an end, he maintained a loyal following throughout his career. In the 1990s, he mounted an effective comeback with the albums The Icon Is Love (1994), whose biggest hit, “Practice What You Preach” reached the top of the charts. In 1996, White recorded the incredibly steamy “Wildest Dreams” with rock icon Tina Turner. Staying Power (1999) won 2 Grammy Awards. In addition, his music was often featured on the sitcom Ally McBeal and he appeared on the show twice.

Death
White had been ill with chronically high blood pressure for some time, which resulted in kidney failure in the autumn of 2002. He suffered a stroke in May 2003, after which he was forced to retire from public life. On 4 July, 2003, he died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from renal failure. White was cremated, and his ashes were scattered by his family off the California coast

On 20 September, 2004, he was posthumously inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York.

I’m back from vacation…

Every few months I step away from old school and jump into some new music. You remember June Jackin? April Rain? Well this is “Back To School”

I walk my kids 3 blocks to school every morning. Being in Harlem, a car will inevitably come past blasting a popular song. For instance: T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It” came on and kids stoppped in the street…and broke out dancing! At 8am! I put some of these together with some new tracks I been jammin to. Enjoy!

Review:

I was one of those people who heard about Amanda Diva but never paid too much attention to her. A pretty face, while listening to her new mixtape, I quickly discovered that she had enormous talent on the mic. The lyrics are thought provoking and cerebral. The freestyles are sick! The beats are a awesome mix of Neo-soul, cutting snares, and head knocking old school. Amanda Diva put a lot of work into this and it shows! Notable cuts include: The whole cd. You won’t be able to turn it off! I know she’s a woman…but to the guys it’s no chicky fodder.

Top 5 Banging Beats worth listening to:
-Heart Of The City [Windows Over Harlem remix](The title speaks for itself and the beats match!)
-Rocksteady (Made me feel I was at the Rucker’s Game)
-Chucks & Kangols (Club banger..Diva Track)
-You Say (The beat is minimal which drives the lyric subject matter harder)
-Crazy World (Reminds you of an old school beat is surprisingly fresh)

Meme then Track listing….

The Seven Songs that are starting my summer off right!

1. Hi Haters – Maino - I haven’t always been an angel. I know I have pissed some folks off royally! Yet, they still feel the need to follow me from blog to blog. That’s cool. So to you I say…Hi Hater LOL Seriously…I was walking down 125th with sis in law…this song came on…at least 10 people within listening distance started dancing…yours truly included…right on the street (I love Harlem)….no doubt this is my jam…

2. Take You Down – Chris Brown - It’s no secret that I stan for Chris Brown hard! (at least it shouldn’t be lol) This song is so hot. The beat is like a cross between Prince and Ready For The World (to me) and the lyrics and tonality are classic Chris Brown. Sigh…This is my song!

3. Damaged/2 of You – Danity Kane-I watched Making the band 3 and just ate up every episode. I was one of those people that watched it on the regular night and re-runs during the week. Puff did not disappoint. But what else did you expect?

It’s DJ Diva The Mixtress of R&B, but I really love all genres of music. You knew that right?

This week’s mix was inspired by a post I saw a month ago on Soulbounce.com. Shout out to Butta, Nova and Ill Mami my girl from Harlem!

Also in this mix, my Soul Podcasting crew (That’s right yall I gave us a name…we’s a crew now!) They stopped by to show me some love. I couldn’t include everybody this time but you can be sure their shoutouts will be in every mix from now on! I loves me some love! This week we had the Sensei, EJ Flavors of ejflavors.com, Nikki of the Soulrific podcast at theinfiniteink.com, Mr Fresh of the Sunday Soundtrack at vibesandscribes.com and Darrenkeith from the MyLoveformusic podcast at myloveformusic.blogspot.com.

Now on to Reggae in the late 80′s and early 90′s. It was a fresh and new sound…different from the classics we heard from Bob Marley! The music was gritting with banging beats and smooth melodies. The lyrics were full of women empowerment, adoration of females and aggresion…just what we needed LOL. This mixtape brings back my teen memories of grinding it out at the Columbia University parties in NY.

I’m still working on the mixtress site. Learning css has been a trip and it would be great if you guys could drop a line in the comments of what you would like to see before I launch and go live. My traffic has exploded to over 1000 hits a day and I need a DJ Diva 2.0 site to handle all that love!

When you get a chance, run over to Ill Doctrine’s site. Jay Smooth made a Soulja Boy parady hip hop dis song for the Democratic debate. The video was hilarious! The full version posted after the break

I hope you love this Dancehall Classics Monday Mixtape by DJ Diva, The Mixtress of R&B.
