It’s seems like forever since I made a mixtape for the mixtress. Heck it’s been even longer since I did a new music mixtape. I’ve knee deep in old school over on TV One working their Unsung series. I’ve done a lot of mixes for them and hopefully soon I can post them here for your listening enjoyment.

But back to this mixtape..

I have been jamming to some of these songs since May so I hope you indulge me in some of my song choices. I have the pleasure of including some new tracks by Syleena Johnson and Kindred The Family. I’m the Mixtress of R&B so of course I have Jill Scott, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Monica and  Tyrese. Although the mix is R&B flavored, I have some hip hop included like that new song Otis by Jay Z and Kanye, some Frank Ocean, Big Sean and J.Cole. I’m sure this mixtape will make you dance so I put in some dance tracks by Pitbull and a new jam “Titanium” from David Guetta featuring Mary that is HOT even with the tags. For my Reggae massive I have some Rhianna, Movado, Elephant Man and a great tune from Melanie Fiona. I got some slow jams too: this mix reminds me of those old school Hot 97 bootleg cds lol

Hey Everybody! What a way to close out the year! Kanye’s new album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” has been on constant repeat in my headphones for the last 3 weeks so I built this mixtape around him. I threw in some new joints, had to look out for Harlem and the Dipset Reunion! That new song by Brandy sounds like a Ne-Yo song and speaking of Ne-Yo, I threw in a couple by him too! Considering that it was Pink Friday last week, I included some Nikki Minaj. Personally I think Lil Kim roasted her in Black Friday so that’s in the mix too!

I love love love hip hop with an alternative sound so there’s sone Lupe Fiasco, Bruno Mars and some Eminem with Rhianna (I LOVE THAT SONG)

Welcome to another Memphis Edition of the Monday Mixtape. Memphis Blues Part 2 aka the Marriage Blues. When I go to different cities, I like to pick up on the musical tastes of those around me and the various night spots we hang out in. Here is the first Memphis Blues Mix that I did (click here). This time around what I noticed the most were that the most popular songs were about cheating…and not just cheating…serious adultery was being committed in these songs. Women..Men…they both were singing about sneaking around on their spouses. Stories, advice, caution…a person could pick up a lot of tips if one was so inclined

Hey Everybody!!!

This mixtape is a step out of the box. Jimi Izrael contacted me and requested that I do a mixtape for the release of his new book “The Denzel Principle- Why Black Women Can’t Find Good Black Men”.

This was a new experience for me..I took his selected readings…read by the Dizzle himself and laid them over popular instrumentals. I took some of the most recent R&B and hip hop songs and placed them between the tracks.

Jimi talks about everything in this mix and it is extremely controversial! He starts it off with Da Dizzle- talking about the Denzel Washington effect on women. Jimi then goes into the Booty Scale where he rates the various aspects of  white female hindparts. He has a diatribe against Kevin Powell…he really doesn’t care for him as you may be able to tell! Ejaculation Negotiaton starts off talking about just that but it ends with a poignant twist! Birds and Bees is a talk that Jimi wants to have with his daughter when she is of age…really as blunt and straight forward as he can be! Jimi has a problem with Essence magazine too and he tells you all about it! if your girl has a lot of friends…then you need to listen to Peeps. He talks about the generational curse of Single Motherhood which almost made me mad enough to stop production (I’m glad I didn’t). In Exhale he talks about Terri McMillian and you know he goes in on her messed up gaydar! and in the final selection of The Lesson he talks about an important childhood experience and how it affected his life.

Happy New Year Everybody!

The new year is starting out great for me…I’ve been pulled back into my old hustle of making customized mixtapes. I had so much fun with this one. This is the story:

One of my good friends L put me in touch one of her friends who was having a cruise ship wedding. When it was determined that my schedule wouldn’t allow me to go to DJ for her, she still wanted a mixtape of her and the groom’s favorite songs done by me. She arranged for the ship’s DJ to allow her to play the cd. Now I know he ain’t gonna be happy when he see them having a ball to my set and sitting during his…but…that’s not my problem.

We contracted a nice rate, she sent me her list of 50 songs. I pared that down to 34 and I produced a pretty tight mix. Matter of fact…the mix was so good I needed to share it with yall too. It has everything on it from hip-hop to soca. A little reggae, some R&B and of course some old school. This is not the final mix that I’m producing for her but it will be very similar with specialized drops and such.

For my friend L I made her cds for her 30th b’day with a song from each year of her birth. She gave them out a party favors on her b’day trip to Vegas! Hey everybody! This mix of new songs is real New York heavy. It could be from the fact that we moved again in Harlem. Really the heart of Harlem this time. I love New York. The feel of the artists..the pounding of the beats. I could see myself having a Lil Mama moment during Jay-Z’s performance too. Shout out to my boy Fave for putting together a quick cover for me and my lil Mama moment!

Most of the songs are relatively new. My daughters made requests for Chris Brown, Beyonce, and Pitbull. I included a new artist Jay Sean cause his song was really catchy to me. My new R&B favorites Ryan Leslie, Mario and Trey Songz.

I put in R. Kelly’s new joint “Religious” which took me to church. I got Boyz II Men’s new single “Back For Good” which is a remake of the hit by Take That. I especially enjoyed that ..thanks Shawn! This week’s mix is some of the best of Timberland. Timberland is one of the best R&B producers I know. Yeah, I know he does rap too but his hiphop beats always appeals to these R&B ears of mine. He has the ability to make the hardest MCs sound danceable! Timberland is a genius. His beats always leave you slightly off kilter, slightly off beat with enough break for grinding. Yeah…I spent a lot of time grinding to Tim. Don’t let the lights go dim on some Aaliyah…don’t let the lights go dim and I owed somebody like Nas…Enough reminiscing…

As usual you may hear a few mistakes…I do this in one take with a little practice time to set up mix points and try out the beatmatching. In case you are wondering why I don’t spend more time on my “craft”..it’s because a Diva has a HUSBAND, a set of twins who are honor roll students and attending private school, I’m in Graduate School now..pursuing my Ph.D. in English Literature..plus I have a lot of friends…social media peeps included and all of this consumes my time. Oh and did I mention I’m a full time manager at a Top Graduate School? Yeah..A Diva is busy…

That said…I tried to camouflage any really bad mix points…I am really proud of some blends…Like 1&2, 2&3, 6&7, 8&9, 14&15, and some more…As said in class…I have a really good ear for beatmixing on turntables..and a talent for playlist selection… so please…enough comments on my beatmixing skills….

Eventually I will purchase more equipment..I went to the Scratch Academy and got that Certificate…so please believe…I KNOW how to scratch!..Every week my mixes get better and every week I birth more music, which gets me back and forth to work and gives some folks pleasure.

This is my Neo Soul.

I almost wrote the back story to this mixtape but I decided to just keep it clean. No need to stir up drama.

This mix is full of tracks that I heard live. Whether the artist was on the come-up or like in the case of D’Angelo, recorded the best album she/he recorded in my book. I saw him at the Beacon…in the all white (Holla if you hear me) when Mos Def was his opening act…I caught Kindred at Le Bar Bat, Jilly and Badu in Philly…Jaguar and Anthony in Jersey and Algebra in ATL. I stumbled into a bar years ago and heard Goapele..staggered into another and heard Floetry. I paid good monies to see Maxwell and Raphael and never regretted a dime!! When I had the pleasure of seeing these artists perform these songs, it sent an aural pleasure down into my bones. I know this one will be on repeat in my IPod…I hope it will be for you too!
