Hey Everybody! I came up with this mix after watching the new Tyler Perry Movie “For Colored Girls” based on the play “For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Wasn’t Enuf” by Ntozake Shange. I personally thought it was a good movie. I was thankful to see so many actresses of color working in a film about us. I am grateful that Tyler took the project on even though most don’t think he was qualified to do it. If he didn’t do it…who would have?

Anyway, considering my situation and the fact that I identified with most of the characters I decided to put together my own mix. I chose a song for all of the characters and for myself. I hope you enjoy it!

This week”s Monday Mixtape is a request by @Eb_the_Celeb. A few months back she requested a 90′s girl mix. I tried to include many of the girl groups and collabos that were quite popular in 90′s R&B. I left some people out like Xscape but this is a theme I know I will return to. In the mid 90′s I spent a lot of time in the clubs and doing Karaoke..but how is that different from now?? Anyway..

Me and Eb been cool for a good long while. The Internet does that to people but I’ve met her in person too. A Harlem Socialite..Eb’s great enthusiam is only matched by her hard work. The Girl is busy! She’s into sports, reflection, video and of course music! This week’s mix is some of the best of Timberland. Timberland is one of the best R&B producers I know. Yeah, I know he does rap too but his hiphop beats always appeals to these R&B ears of mine. He has the ability to make the hardest MCs sound danceable! Timberland is a genius. His beats always leave you slightly off kilter, slightly off beat with enough break for grinding. Yeah…I spent a lot of time grinding to Tim. Don’t let the lights go dim on some Aaliyah…don’t let the lights go dim and I owed somebody like Nas…Enough reminiscing…

As usual you may hear a few mistakes…I do this in one take with a little practice time to set up mix points and try out the beatmatching. In case you are wondering why I don’t spend more time on my “craft”..it’s because a Diva has a HUSBAND, a set of twins who are honor roll students and attending private school, I’m in Graduate School now..pursuing my Ph.D. in English Literature..plus I have a lot of friends…social media peeps included and all of this consumes my time. Oh and did I mention I’m a full time manager at a Top Graduate School? Yeah..A Diva is busy…

That said…I tried to camouflage any really bad mix points…I am really proud of some blends…Like 1&2, 2&3, 6&7, 8&9, 14&15, and some more…As said in class…I have a really good ear for beatmixing on turntables..and a talent for playlist selection… so please…enough comments on my beatmixing skills….

Hey Everybody! I had more requests for the 90′s so this time I went mid late 90′s. Full of the bouncy R&B joints and since I spent the weekend with hubby, I threw in a few joints for him too. He’s been playing my Mellow May and August Heat mixtapes a lot in the last two weeks so I know this will make it onto his Ipod as well. I experimented and practiced more with the techniques I learned at the Scratch Academy..Sometimes it worked…sometimes I didn’t quite hit the mark..I’m a work in progress. Despite the minor flaws I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do!
