I have loved books since I was a toddler. My father said that if I loved him…I would read…and so I did. Growing up, I could always be found with a book in hand or close by. I fell asleep with books in my hands, holding my place in the text with stiff fingers but a firm hand. I read when I ate, barely looking at my food, and my Grandma would often remark, “Margaret..you will probably eat a roach one day because you’re always staring in a book!” I adore reading..what can I say?

I still remember when I first came across the word Nigger in a book. I was in the fourth grade and I had “borrowed” a book from my mother’s friend downstairs. I promise you I returned it. My mother would visit and talk smack, and when they turned their backs, I would swipe through and hide in my pants whatever books I could get my 9 year old little fingers on. I think she might have known because she always had juicy books lying around. One afternoon, I copped “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston. Later that night, by the time my eyes got to the line “De nigger woman is de mule uh de world so fur as Ah can see.”, my little body was almost ready to explode. None of my Little House on Prairie Books, textbooks, or fairytales had language like this. It almost seemed wrong actually seeing it in print, but by the time I got lost in Janie’s story, I became acclimated to it and pretty much forgot about it.

Until the second time it happened.

I was in the 9th grade at Hunter College High School and experiencing the “cultural mulatto-ness” described by Trey Ellis in the “New Black Aesthetic”. I was the only black child from the inner city, in an English class of white gifted and privileged children, and while it could be uncomfortable at times being on display, I protected myself by writing great papers but avoiding class discussion. When we read “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison, I let my classmates run the dialog, no way was I going to discuss race out loud with them. On the third day of the conversation, my beautiful black English teacher, that I had begun to admire, turned to me and said “Ok so Margaret, tell the class what it felt like the first time somebody called you a nigger..”

You could have heard a piece of lint drop. 16 pairs of blue, green, and brown startled eyes locked upon me, and I wished I could have dissolved and melted through the carpet. I got really angry about being put on the spot, so I narrowed my eyes and coldly said, “Well no one has called me that until now. Give me a minute.” She grabbed her chest, gasped loudly, and for a second I think I saw what a physical apology looked like. She apologized more profusely after class and I never told on her. What could I have said anyway? She and I both knew that in my working class neighborhood, me and my friends said nigger all the time. My mother said it, my aunts said it, me and my cousins often cracked up about the fact that our religious Grandmother tried not to cuss but would call somebody a nigger in a heartbeat.

But that was different. And what she did was different. Maybe it shouldn’t have been. But it just was.

It's time for Cupid's Hunt again!!!! 6 years strong. I am so proud to be part of such an awesome group of podcasters.

I decided to get raunchy with it this year. I love R. Kelly. That's right..I said it. I LOVE THE R. Despite his character failings, I still love his music. In the 90's, R. Kelly almost single-handedly revived R&B. When he says he put the "R" in R&B, he ain't lying! When Bump N Grind dropped in 1993, it spent 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart. We LOVED the frank nature of his songs and he never let us down. On every album, The R. supplied us with songs about sex and love, and sometimes the two were interchangeable. I don't judge an artist for his personal life, I deal with the music. So I hope you enjoy this mix of my favorite R. Kelly Sex Songs and again..I am not responsible for any babies made while listening to this mix. No child support here ;)

Cupid’s Hunt is the premiere online collaboration event where DJ and podcasters from all over the Internet release loved-themed music mixes all on the same day: Valentine’s Day!

Mission:

To be the world’s musical love soundtrack on Valentine’s Day

Company Overview:

Here are the FAQ (’frequently asked questions”) page about the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration Event.

Q1. What is “Cupid’s Hunt”?

A1. “Cupid’s Hunt” (or CH for short) is a collaboration project of music podcasters and music fans in celebration of Valentine’s Day. On this day all of the people who are participating have agreed to release and make available for download (in MP3 format) a music and/or audio podcast with a Valentine’s Day theme. This year Valentine’s Day (February 14, 2012) is on a Tuesday.

Q2. Why the name “Cupid’s Hunt”? What does *that* mean?

A2. The name Cupid’s Hunt came out of a late night/all night brainstorming session on Twitter back in January, 2008. “Cupid”, the symbol of Love/Valentine’s Day and “Hunt”, meaning to search for. When you put them together and apply the phrase to the world of podcasting you have a search for music online. Or, as the CH project has been subtitled: “Searching for Love Music… In All The Right Places!”

We all know that I am a HUGE Prince fan. I also recently went back to attending church. So I coupled my resurgence of faith with the Purple One's love of God and came up with this mix. Some songs I chose for the outright worship of the Most High. Others I chose for their references to scripture or biblical stories. I picked some because of the beautiful way Prince sung about Adam and Eve and what it must have been like for the first man and first woman. I always felt he sung about that story beautifully.

I hope you enjoy and remember that "Love is God and God is Love".

Butta from Soulbounce asked to create an old school mix for the 5th Blog Anniversary and when she sent me the cover art I knew what I had to do. This mixtape is full of hip hop dance tracks from 1980-1985.
“B-girls and b-boys, make some noise for our newest Mixologists mix coming straight outta the crates of DJ Diva with Jam On It. Fresh, Boogie Boys, Fearless Four and so much more to get your head nodding. The Mixtress of R&B most definitely knows her hip hop as this mix will attest to. So without further adieu, press play and remember the good old days when hip hop has young and fun. “

Hey Everybody. This mixtape is a dedication to my new friend Mr. Red and also a salute to the R&B from the year 2005. As with many of my mixes, the concept usually starts from a couple of songs and grows from there. In this case it was Yo (Excuse Me Miss) and You Don’t Know My Name. Those two songs kept swirling around in my head whenever I thought of Mr. Red and how we met in November, so I did some research and came up with a playlist on Spotify. I thought it was private until I noticed people subscribing to it. Also in 2005, two of my favorite producers Pharrell and Timberland were churning out hit after hit. I attended a Neptunes vs. Timberland party recently and I decided to go ahead and make a mixtape out of the list.

A long convoluted story right? For those that were there at @KittyBradshaw 's birthday party ...(@f_uitlist and @TheJadedNYer you were there..lol) you know that I've been holding on to this for a minute! LOL The backstory was so sweet though. A cute guy, staring at you the whole night during a party. You feel the attraction and so much is said through the meaningful looks, but neither of you makes a move. It's a dope party and before you know it the night is over. There is one brief exchange, neither of you get the other's number or their name, and you walk away thinking what could have been. Until he finds you on Facebook LOL

And if you're wondering...he's more handsome than the guy in the cover pic...and he was wearing that red sweater too ;)
