Hey Everybody! This week is another “your favorite blogger’s, favorite DJ” mix. I have had the good fortune of knowing Lynne D Johnson (virtually) for quite a number of years. First in the Blog world when I started out 7 years ago on Blogspot, but for the last 4 years I have followed her on Twitter, and I also had the luck of winning a book with the foreword written by her. Lynne was one of the first users on Spotify , and she and I began to enjoy each other’s playlists.

Through Facebook and Twitter, I was invited to celebrate her birthday at Negril’s in the village hosted by Big Ced and The Industry Cosign. It my first time meeting her in person and she has a personality in real life that is as large as her virtual one! Lynne took me by surprise when she said ”Diva..I want you to make me a mix.” And she was serious! So over the weekend I took her most popular Spotify playlist and fashioned a mix for her of late 90′s hip hop.

I really hope she likes it. After years of blog and social media contact, it felt good to hug her in the flesh and to be able to do something just for her. Please read her Bio after the track listing to get a glimpse into how awesome she is! if you blog or use social media for your company, she’s a great asset to learn from.

This is for you Lynne! Love ya!

Love ya!

Once again I prove that I’m your favorite blogger’s favorite DJ. This week is a New Groove/NeoSoul collaboration that I worked on with SueZette for the relaunch of her website DearZette . It was also a good time to highlight some of the independent artists I’ve been listening to like Anthony David, Eric Roberson, Foreign Exchange, Yahzarah and Zo! I’ve included links, so please support the artists!!!!

I was also able to include some independent artists that I have the pleasure of knowing:

The Cross Country Collective is a group made up of Fave, Mr. Fresh and Todd Kelley. I know you have heard all three voices in my mixtapes because they are some of the founders of the Music Podcast Consortium. My big brothers put together a virtual group and released their first EP. I’m so proud of them and I know you will love their track “Give It To Ya”.

It was also through C3 that I got to know and love Philip Clark. Philip Clark was born with Rhythm & Blues in his blood, despite being the only funky white boy of his kind to hail from Wyoming. A natural performer since childhood, he continued to hone his aural talents with a formal degree in music and thereafter in some of the best venues and studios in the Rockies. . In 2001, he released his debut, “The State of Blue-Eyed Soul,” which held Top-10 positions on several radio charts. He now lives in Los Angeles and is currently producing his sophomore effort, “The Dreamchilde Suites.” I included his single “World Turns Around”. It’s such a great track and I’m looking forward to featuring him again soon..

One last special mention goes out to my boy Kristopher Lamont. A Detroit native, I met Kris at a Michael Jackson Memorial concert held at SOB’s by Soulbounce and Eric Roberson. “Change” is Kristopher’s first track as an independent artist and was recorded with Maurice “Moe” Whitsett. Presently, work is being put in with Keith “Bubby” Webb on Kristopher’s debut album looking to be released in the winter. His voice is buttery, velvety and quite polished and there is already a buzz about town for this upcoming act from Detroit. “I want to touch people with my voice. I came to bring love to all through my music. Even when I’m singing about things that might not make one smile, it’s to say, – hey, I’ve been through that too and I hope this song gets you through.” I have to say I love this track and it quickly became one of my theme songs!

Below is what Suezette had to say on her site:

“I am blessed beyond measure.

Every single day I thank the Creator for blessing me with the beautiful and talented spirits S/He has placed in my life. One of those spirits is my lovely big sister DJ Diva…your favorite blogger’s favorite DJ. I met Diva via the matrix over 7+years ago and it’s been love ever since. Besides being one of the most amazing women I have the pleasure of calling my friend…she’s also an ill DJ and the fairy godmother of podcasting (you better ask about her!!).

It made perfect sense when I was thinking about what I wanted to do to officially announce the return of DearZette that I collaborate with the lovely DJ Diva. This is our THIRD mixtape collaboration and while it’s not as sexy as our other mixtapes…the goodness is all still there. Featuring some of my favorites like Jill Scott, Eric Roberson, Cee-Lo Green, and Bilal…her Monday Mixtape in honor of my return to blogging is sure to leave you feeling good!

New motivation…new site design…new groove….neo-soul. All about the new new yall!”

The History of Carnival

What is carnival?

It is an annual celebration of life found in many countries of the world. And in fact, by learning more about carnival we can learn more about ourselves and a lot about accepting and understanding other cultures.

Where did the word “carnival” come from?

Hundred and hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italy started the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent. Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their festival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat.” As time passed, carnivals in Italy became quite famous; and in fact the practice spread to France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the French, Spanish, and Portuguese began to take control of the Americas and other parts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating carnival.

African influences on carnival traditions

Important to Caribbean festival arts are the ancient African traditions of parading and moving in circles through villages in costumes and masks. Circling villages was believed to bring good fortune, to heal problems, and chill out angry relatives who had died and passed into the next world. Carnival traditions also borrow from the African tradition of putting together natural objects (bones, grasses, beads, shells, fabric) to create a piece of sculpture, a mask, or costume — with each object or combination of objects representing a certain idea or spiritual force.

Feathers were frequently used by Africans in their motherland on masks and headdresses as a symbol of our ability as humans to rise above problems, pains, heartbreaks, illness — to travel to another world to be reborn and to grow spiritually. Today, we see feathers used in many, many forms in creating carnival costumes.

African dance and music traditions transformed the early carnival celebrations in the Americas, as African drum rhythms, large puppets, stick fighters, and stilt dancers began to make their appearances in the carnival festivities.

In many parts of the world, where Catholic Europeans set up colonies and entered into the slave trade, carnival took root. Brazil, once a Portuguese colony, is famous for its carnival, as is Mardi Gras in Louisiana (where African-Americans mixed with French settlers and Native Americans). Carnival celebrations are now found throughout the Caribbean in Barbados, Jamaica, Grenada, Dominica, Haiti, Cuba, St. Thomas, St. Marten; in Central and South America in Belize, Panama, Brazil; and in large cities in Canada and the U.S. where Caribbean people have settled, including Brooklyn, Miami, and Toronto. Even San Francisco has a carnival!

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad’s carnival is a beautiful example of how carnival can unite the world. For in this small nation, the beliefs and traditions of many cultures have come together; and for a brief five days each year, the whole country forgets their differences to celebrate life!

Like many other nations under colonial rule, the history of Native Americans and African people in Trinidad is a brutal, sad story. Spain and England at different times both claimed Trinidad as their colonies. Under British rule, the French settled in Trinidad, bringing with them their slaves, customs, and culture. By 1797, 14,000 French settlers came to live in Trinidad, consisting of about 2,000 whites and 12,000 slaves. Most of the native peoples (often called the Amerindians) who were the first people to live in Trinidad, died from forced labor and illness.

Carnival was introduced to Trinidad around 1785, as the French settlers began to arrive. The tradition caught on quickly, and fancy balls were held where the wealthy planters put on masks, wigs, and beautiful dresses and danced long into the night. The use of masks had special meaning for the slaves, because for many African peoples, masking is widely used in their rituals for the dead. Obviously banned from the masked balls of the French, the slaves would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards — using their own rituals and folklore, but also imitating their masters’ behavior at the masked balls.

For African people, carnival became a way to express their power as individuals, as well as their rich cultural traditions. After 1838 (when slavery was abolished), the freed Africans began to host their own carnival celebrations in the streets that grew more and more elaborate, and soon became more popular than the balls.

Today, carnival in Trinidad is like a mirror that reflects the faces the many immigrants who have come to this island nation from Europe, Africa, India, and China. African, Asian, and American Indian influences have been particularly strong.

Carnival is such an important aspect of life in Trinidad that many schools believe that sponsoring a carnival band is a way to teach young people about their roots and culture. In Trinidad’s Kiddies Carnival, hundreds of schools and community organizations participate! In this way, communities work together to develop stronger friendships and greater respect for the many cultures that make up Trinidad.

Creating a carnival production

In order to put a carnival band together, it takes many weeks of welding; sewing; gluing; applying feathers, sequins, foil papers, glitter and lots of creativity, energy, and patience. The first step is to come up with a theme or overall concept for the band and to develop costume illustrations for each section of dancers. Costumes are then sewn, decorated, and fitted to each individual dancer. All this creative activity takes place in what are referred to in the Caribbean as “mas camps,” where teamwork and organization are crucial to creating an award-winning production.

The larger costumes are usually more difficult to design and build. Huge frames are created by bending wire into shapes, then covering with paper mâché, foam, and other materials. Physics play an important role, as the costume must be able to move and dance across stages and streets, and not fall apart! Many different forms of decorations and materials (natural and man-made) are used to transform the costume into a dream of the mind’s eye. Created primarily from wire, netting, foam, and paint, these awesome costumes mesmerize and dazzle spectators.

One of the most incredible artists working today in Trinidad is Peter Minshall. He is acclaimed internationally as the foremost artist working in the field of “dancing mobiles,” a form of performance art that combines the three-dimensional quality of large-scale sculpture with the dramatic and choreographic expressiveness of a live human performer. As Minshall has noted, “The dancing mobile is one of many forms to grow out of the masquerade tradition of Trinidad Carnival.”

The Birth of the Steelband

One of the exciting aspects of Caribbean carnival is the appearance in the early 20th century of the steel pan, which are instruments made from used oil drums that have been cut off on one end and then shaped, pounded, and tuned. Every carnival season, steelbands, composed of one to two hundred pan players, practice for months on end. Ready with their tunes, these steelbands take to the stadiums and the streets, to create some of the most beautiful music in the world.

The history of the steelband in Trinidad and Tobago is directly tied to the banning of all types of drumming in Trinidad in the 1880’s. Though this ban was not readily accepted and rioting resulted, ultimately Africans applied and readapted their tradition of the drum to create new forms and mediums of music, including the tamboo bamboo, a rhythmic ensemble made up of bamboo joints beaten together and pounded on the ground. Biscuit tins and dustbins were manipulated and crafted into instruments, becoming the first “pans.” To explore the roots of pan and understand that this phenomenal music came about through years of struggle and sacrifice.

Here’s what they had to say over at Soulbounce:

How remiss would we be at SoulBounce, now featuring an all-female staff for the first time in our three years of existence, if we did not include a little sisterly love in our Mixologists series. Long-time friend of our little website that could and did, DJ Diva, aka “The Mixtress of R&B,” brings the hotness wherever she can be found. Since we’re all ’80s babies and who doesn’t love a little early ’80s R&B hotness in their lives, DJ Diva has carefully selected some songs for her debut Mixologists mixtape. This most certainly won’t be her last but that’s not to say that you shouldn’t be downloading this mix as fast as possible. This particular mix is a preview of her Monday Mixtape so we’re all in for an early treat this weekend. Make sure to grab a CD-quality version for 99 cents if you want your mix to bang in all of its glory. Many thanks to DJ Diva for blessing us with such a great mix.

Jimi Izrael and DJ Diva are back with a new mixtape for The Denzel Principle. I’m off vacation/work break to bring you a hot new mixtape. Jimi Izrael, the author of The Denzel Principle: Why Black Women Can’t Find Good Black Men, reached out to me to fashion a new mix for him. I enjoyed the first one I did for him (which you can find here), so I was happy to be tapped to do the second one. Thanks to TripleGoddess for the cover and image you see here! I’ve read his book 3 times so I had an idea of what I was looking at the second time around. As with the first, I included many instrumentals (can you guess which?) and some of my new favorites jams to blend in between his readings. The full length track is available so take a listen and respond to what Jimi has to say. His readings are in black. For the record, I agree with Jimi on a lot of his points. Not Denzel though…more like Boris Kodjoe for me.

Did you catch Jimi on Nightline with Hil Harper, Sherri Shepard and that other chick (no shade/shade lol) Here’s a clip:

“The Denzel Principle” is not a book of advice, but rather a book of lessons. Advice can be good or bad, but lessons come with a guarantee: you will absolutely learn SOMETHING. You may not like what you learn, or see the use for it immediately, but you learn from a lesson, and everyone will learn something different. “Denzel” is smart, bitter, sad, happy, over-sexed, hilarious and exciting — with a lesson for everyone who reads it. Is your man a “Denzel?” Take the quiz. With this book, Izrael has craft a commentary like no other.

And everyone is talking about it.

“The Denzel Principle is a humorous look at the age old complaint of the inability for African American women to find a “good man”. {jimi izrael} walks you through his personal romantic experiences and derives his opinion from that. He feels that African American women have been poisoned by years of Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington and Essence Magazine. Should you read this book? I think you should…” – Oretha Winston

This Monday Mixtape was a special request from one of my listeners. I put up a shoutbox for requests and Ebony so sweetly requested a mix of songs that inspire women. This was perfect timing because my birthday is Saturday and nothing makes an Aries feel better than some pump-me-up music. Some of my choices may leave you like huh? but I must say all of these songs mean a lot to me. I’ll never forget when I went on an interview for Pepsi and my cell phone went off. It was my mother of course, but I was so embarrassed because my ringtone was “Don’t Cha”. My interviewer smiled at me and said, “I love that song too”. I got the job.

Anyway, I hope this mix inspires you. I made it kid friendly because my daughters need to listen to it too! Enjoy!

This week”s Monday Mixtape is a request by @Eb_the_Celeb. A few months back she requested a 90′s girl mix. I tried to include many of the girl groups and collabos that were quite popular in 90′s R&B. I left some people out like Xscape but this is a theme I know I will return to. In the mid 90′s I spent a lot of time in the clubs and doing Karaoke..but how is that different from now?? Anyway..

Me and Eb been cool for a good long while. The Internet does that to people but I’ve met her in person too. A Harlem Socialite..Eb’s great enthusiam is only matched by her hard work. The Girl is busy! She’s into sports, reflection, video and of course music! I’m glad she had patience for this mix and I think it’s my finest to date in terms of beatmatching by ear…Can’t wait for my Serato box! I hope you enjoy it!
