Monday Mixtape: Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston has always sung my life’s soundtrack. I regret that I haven’t done a tribute to her up until now. My mother has begged me for 2 years to do a mix. I made a cd for her but I didn’t take the time to do a full fledged mix. I still remember when she brought home Whitney’s first album. She and my father would dance in the living room: slow dance and work the floor to her fast hits. When they would go out and leave me to babysit, I remember listening to her slow jams. I would sit, obsess over my latest crush, think and cry over the lyrics. As I grew older, Whitney Houston continued to touch my life with her music. Ever since I found out about her death, I have been devastated. My mother said that she thought I would do a good job with this mix and I really hope I did. Thank you Whitney. Thank you. And thank you Mommy. You have always guided my music life and I’m thankful that I had mother like you to show me what real music is and was.

New Mixtape: That’s The Way Love Goes

Everyone knows I like to do “themes” with my mixtapes. I like to tell stories through music. When I first started to assemble this playlist I thought “this is going to be the Bipolar Janet Mix”. It didn’t seem like the songs would fit together. Slowly an idea began growing in my head about how to make the songs more cohesive for your listening experience. I’ve decided to go with my version of how love affairs start, progress and eventually fade or burn out. Being single for a year now, this mixtape gave me a chance to illustrate how my love stories usually go..

Hey Everybody!!! I’m back from vacation down in Memphis, TN!!!!

This is the first of 4 mixtapes that were inspired while I was on my vacation. Bobby Womack Vs David Ruffin. Both were powerhouses in the R&B scene during the 70′s and early 80′s and my heart has a soft spot for both of them. Most of my younger audience will probably not recognize any of the music…but I’m sure you’ll pick up the beats to some of your favorite rap songs.

Jimi Izrael and DJ Diva are back with a new mixtape for The Denzel Principle. I’m off vacation/work break to bring you a hot new mixtape. Jimi Izrael, the author of The Denzel Principle: Why Black Women Can’t Find Good Black Men, reached out to me to fashion a new mix for him. I enjoyed the first one I did for him (which you can find here), so I was happy to be tapped to do the second one. Thanks to TripleGoddess for the cover and image you see here! I’ve read his book 3 times so I had an idea of what I was looking at the second time around. As with the first, I included many instrumentals (can you guess which?) and some of my new favorites jams to blend in between his readings. The full length track is available so take a listen and respond to what Jimi has to say. His readings are in black. For the record, I agree with Jimi on a lot of his points. Not Denzel though…more like Boris Kodjoe for me.

Monday Mixtape: Diana Ross vs. Donna Summer (Disco Divas)

I have to say that I had a great time putting this one together. I was going to do Disco but somehow it shaped up into a battle between Diana Ross and Donna Summer. Long before there was a Bey Bey and Rhi Rhi battle…there was the grown Diva battle between Diana and Donna. Disco was good for Diana’s emerging solo career and for the newcomer Donna’s breakout hits. The 70′s were good to these ladies so I included most of their fast hits.

I will be honest…the last part of the mixtape was a birthday request for myself. I loved Diana’s ballads in the 70′s so I tacked on my favorites. I think my absolute favs are “Remember Me” and “Good Morning Heartache”. She killed it in Lady Sings The Blues and Mahogany.

Nearly 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix remains not only rock’s most iconic and influential guitarist but perhaps its most prolific ghost.

Valleys of Neptune, containing a dozen previously unreleased studio tracks recorded mostly in 1969, arrives March 9 to kick off Sony/Legacy’s massive reissue campaign.

The legend’s 11th studio album — the eighth to be issued posthumously and first since 1980 — boasts his Experience trio’s final studio recordings, his earliest sessions with bassist Billy Cox and the long-shelved Mr. Bad Luck, intended for 1968′s Axis: Bold as Love.
