My body is here but my mind, soul and heart lie back in Memphis!

As soon as I got Memphis, my sister had arranged for us to have a Margarita party (by ourselves) and she wanted to have a Prince concert! Now Prince is never a problem for me, I may be only missing 1 or 2 songs from his entire collection! I also wanted her to hear his new album 2010, which was only released through the Daily Mirror in the UK. (I live in NY but won’t say how I got my hands on it!)  I think 2010 is a great album. Three songs for me stand out in particular: LayDown, Act of God and Sticky Like Glue. The last one, Sticky Like Glue, is not only the best song on the album, but it may be the best I’ve heard from Prince since Musicology!

Hey Everybody! It’s time for a new Producer Spotlight. This week I’m doing Swizz Beatz!!!

I call him the King of the break because he has best break timing I’ve ever heard. Although he mainly works with rappers, Swizz is more than capable of producing an R&B Mega Hit! My favorite song to dance to in the club is still “Get Me Bodied” and Beyonce’s handlers were brilliant when they got Swizz to do that beat. Swizz Beatz has been on the scene since the late 90′s and much of his early work was with the Ruff Ryder crew. He made those hard core thugs from Yonkers transform into club kings with his beats. One of his best years so far was 2007 where he had 10 songs on the billboard charts.

This Monday Mixtape is all about my birthday idol Mariah Carey. We all share a birthday with someone…and I do with Mariah! Mariah Carey has been an idol of mine for  long time. We share the same birthday and although she is 4 years older than me..she has always provided me with the inspiration to follow my dreams. From her first song Vision of Love, her incredible voice range has captivated us for yeas. In the beginning of her career, I thought it was odd that she kept releasing “generic” versions of her songs and remixes which were always catchy and filled with the hippest rappers and producers in the business. Of course we can all see now that it was absolute genius from a business sense and it also provided Mariah with a chance to step out of the songstress spotlight, relax and just be herself. As an Aries woman, I commensurated with her very public breakdown and her fight to regain herself and her image. I am very happy for her continued success and I wish her a very happy birthday…which was shared by me!

Hey Everybody!!!

This mixtape is a step out of the box. Jimi Izrael contacted me and requested that I do a mixtape for the release of his new book “The Denzel Principle- Why Black Women Can’t Find Good Black Men”.

This was a new experience for me..I took his selected readings…read by the Dizzle himself and laid them over popular instrumentals. I took some of the most recent R&B and hip hop songs and placed them between the tracks.

Jimi talks about everything in this mix and it is extremely controversial! He starts it off with Da Dizzle- talking about the Denzel Washington effect on women. Jimi then goes into the Booty Scale where he rates the various aspects of  white female hindparts. He has a diatribe against Kevin Powell…he really doesn’t care for him as you may be able to tell! Ejaculation Negotiaton starts off talking about just that but it ends with a poignant twist! Birds and Bees is a talk that Jimi wants to have with his daughter when she is of age…really as blunt and straight forward as he can be! Jimi has a problem with Essence magazine too and he tells you all about it! if your girl has a lot of friends…then you need to listen to Peeps. He talks about the generational curse of Single Motherhood which almost made me mad enough to stop production (I’m glad I didn’t). In Exhale he talks about Terri McMillian and you know he goes in on her messed up gaydar! and in the final selection of The Lesson he talks about an important childhood experience and how it affected his life.

This week’s mix is some of the best of Timberland. Timberland is one of the best R&B producers I know. Yeah, I know he does rap too but his hiphop beats always appeals to these R&B ears of mine. He has the ability to make the hardest MCs sound danceable! Timberland is a genius. His beats always leave you slightly off kilter, slightly off beat with enough break for grinding. Yeah…I spent a lot of time grinding to Tim. Don’t let the lights go dim on some Aaliyah…don’t let the lights go dim and I owed somebody like Nas…Enough reminiscing…

As usual you may hear a few mistakes…I do this in one take with a little practice time to set up mix points and try out the beatmatching. In case you are wondering why I don’t spend more time on my “craft”..it’s because a Diva has a HUSBAND, a set of twins who are honor roll students and attending private school, I’m in Graduate School now..pursuing my Ph.D. in English Literature..plus I have a lot of friends…social media peeps included and all of this consumes my time. Oh and did I mention I’m a full time manager at a Top Graduate School? Yeah..A Diva is busy…

That said…I tried to camouflage any really bad mix points…I am really proud of some blends…Like 1&2, 2&3, 6&7, 8&9, 14&15, and some more…As said in class…I have a really good ear for beatmixing on turntables..and a talent for playlist selection… so please…enough comments on my beatmixing skills….

I do this “every week”…I give you a new theme every week…I put a lot of time in choosing a good playlist to go along with my concept…I make my own coverart every week and I’m no artist! I’m really tired of the “Oh you didn’t do this right” and “you didn’t scratch..blah blah blah” comments.

I say all that to say…this is my hobby…and I enjoy it…I really do. Eventually I will purchase more equipment..I went to the Scratch Academy and got that Certificate…so please believe…I KNOW how to scratch!..Every week my mixes get better and every week I birth more music, which gets me back and forth to work and gives some folks pleasure.
